The Influence Open Mic

Since 2006 Influence Music Hall has presented a live open mic every Friday night. Tualatin Valley Artists is an organization of creative people dedicated to improving our community’s quality of life by enhancing its art and culture. With our strong focus on building and presenting a regional sense of art and culture, we provide education, quality gallery display, poetry and musical performance — all in an atmosphere of encouragement and opportunity.

Open Mic Host

As the face of our Open Mic nights, the Host acts as the bridge between Tualatin Valley Artists and the community. By creating a supportive and organized environment, you enable local talent to flourish and help sustain our operations by actively representing the Influence Music Hall Mission. 

Open Mic Host Impact

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Your support is crucial in sustaining our programs and expanding our reach. As an Open Mic Host, you directly fulfill our mission to provide a platform for artists and musicians to showcase their talents and connect with the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the sign-up list, introduce performers with enthusiasm, and transition smoothy between acts to keep the event running on time.
  • Clearly communicate and enforce Open Mic guidelines (e.g., time limits, content standards) to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all performers.
  • Actively direct the audience to the Tualatin Valley Artists website throughout the event, making a persuasive call-to-action for donations to support the organization's mission.
  • Welcome new attendees and answer basic questions about Tualatin Valley Artists, serving as the primary point of hospitality.

A great host is:

  • Comfortable with public speaking and using a microphone
  • Able to command a room with a friendly and welcoming demeanor
  • Passionate about the local Hillsboro arts and music scene
  • Reliable and punctual
  • A good people person

Time Committment (flexible)

  • Open mics are on Friday evenings. Sign up for the date you want to work (preferably at least one Friday per month)
  • Opens mic staff starts at 6:30PM and are on duty until the session is completed (usually by 11PM)
  • Work with other volunteers to create custom schedules (for example: work first half of the session, then hand it off to another volunteer)

Sound Engineer at Influence Music Hall

As the Open Mic Sound Engineer, you directly supporting Tualatin Valley Artists’ mission to provide a professional platform for Hillsboro’s talent. Perfect for someone who loves the technical side of music and wants to ensure our local performers sound their absolute best.

Open Mic Sound Crew Impact

You are the bridge between the artist and the audience. By managing the technical landscape of our open mic nights, you ensure that every musician—from the first-timer to the seasoned pro—feels supported and sounds professional, fostering a vibrant and inclusive arts community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Audio Setup: Turn on the PA system, microphones, monitors, and cabling.
  • Sound Checks: Assist performers with "plug-and-play" transitions, adjusting levels and monitor mixes to their preference.
  • Live Mixing: Maintain balanced sound throughout the performances, ensuring clarity for the audience and comfort for the artists.
  • Troubleshooting: Quickly identify and resolve technical glitches (feedback, cable issues) to keep the show running smoothly.
  • Stage Management: Facilitate efficient transitions between sets by helping performers plug in and unplug safely.

A great sound engineer is:

  • Naturally "service-first" —helping nervous performers feel at ease is just as important as the audio levels.
  • Willing to learn the basics of live sound reinforcement (mixers, signal flow, and EQ).
  • Able to troubleshoot in real time with a calm, professional demeanor.
  • Passionate about the local Hillsboro arts and music scene
  • Reliable and punctual
  • A good people person
